Škoda Fabia: the big “little” Czech

The 4th generation of the Škoda Fabia arrives on the compact sedan market.

Perhaps more discreet than the other models from the brand, the Skoda Fabia is one of the cars that have contributed to the fame of the Czech brand. For this fourth generation of the Fabia, the manufacturer from Mlada Boreslav has done something big. For the first time, the Škoda Fabia is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 modular platform (this is an optimization in terms of active and passive safety).

A high degree of torsional rigidity forms the technical basis of the car. At 4,108 mm, the new Fabia is significantly longer than the previous generation. Design and proportions are assertive. With a wheelbase increased by 94 mm to 2,564 mm and, at 1,780 mm high, the car is 48 mm wider. An increase in overall dimensions allows for even more spaciousness. On the trunk side, the volume is 380 liters, which is 50 liters more than before. The trunk capacity is increased to 1,190 liters by lowering the rear seats. The car keeps its initial DNA. This 4th generation Skoda Fabia offers a great modernity.

Inside, the dashboard is symmetrical with a floating center screen. A combination of digital instrument and horizontal decorative strips. At launch, the Active, Ambition and Style finishes will be available. This is the first Fabia available with a combination of digital instrument, featuring a 10.25-inch digital display. The driver can choose from a variety of layouts to suit their needs. These include the classic layout, where the analog instruments are styled round. With the Dynamics package, a 5th display is offered with a Sport view. The tachometer is centrally located.

A human-sized car for the city.

The Digital Cockpit can display radio stations, music album covers and saved photos of callers and the map zooms in on intersections and displays them in a separate window. The Fabia comes standard with an analog dashboard that has a 3.5-inch information screen. It is equipped with a dual-zone Climatronic for all passengers. All functions of the system can be operated intuitively with eight buttons.

Adaptive and regulated speed

Travel Assist provides automatic longitudinal and lateral steering assistance. It can be activated with a button and combines several assistance systems at the same time. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) regulates speed relatively to vehicles in front, up to 210 km/h. Lane Assist helps maintain the lane by taking corrective steering actions if necessary.

The interior of this 4th generation Fabia has been upgraded.

Hands-on Detect, Travel Assist checks the pressure of the driver’s hands on the steering wheel consistently. The system improves blind spot detection (Side Assist). It warns the driver of vehicles up to 70 m away that want to overtake them or that are in the car’s blind spot. Park Assist works at speeds up to 40 km/h. It displays the available parking spaces in a slot and in a battle.

Three child seats can be attached in the Skoda Fabia

The new Fabia comes standard with airbags for the driver and front passenger. Curtain airbags and front side airbags.

A rear seat pre-equipped to accommodate child seats.

There are knee airbag for the driver and rear side airbags available to enhance safety. A version with ISOFIX anchors with top tether points on the rear seats. The Fabia can accommodate three securely fastened child seats.

Five new motorizations

Under the hood, the Fabia offers five engines from the latest Volkswagen Group EVO generation. All engines meet the Euro 6d emissions standard. A 1.5 TSI with 110 kW (150 hp), with a 7-speed DSG as standard. There is a 95 hp (70kW) engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.0 TSI develops 110 hp (81 kW), either with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic DSG transmission. More power for the MPI engines developed by Škoda. Two gasoline engines with multi-point injection are available. These three-cylinder MPI engines have a displacement of one liter and generate 65 hp (48 kW) and 80 hp (59 kW).

Some choices for the new Fabia’s engines.

A 150 hp engine available

There are two 1.0 TSI engines with direct injection. The cylinder blocks of these engines have a plasma coating. This replaces the cast iron cylinder liners. Friction is reduced. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are also reduced.

A new 150 hp 1.5 TSI four-cylinder engine will also power the Fabia. Its active cylinder technology (ACT) reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The system will automatically shut off two cylinders, almost without the driver noticing.
