Peugeot e-208: a Lioness in perfect sync

Updated on 10/25/2022
Starting in March 2023, Peugeot will offer a redesigned version of its e-208, featuring a new, more powerful electric motor developed by the supplier E-motors. The power output will be 115 kW (156 hp) compared to 100 kW (136 hp) for the previous model. The e-208 will also gain in range, with a very attractive figure of 400 km under the WLTP cycle (+38 km), making it one of the most efficient city cars on the market.
This updated model will be launched throughout 2023 and will face numerous competitors such as the Renault Zoé E-Tech, Honda E, Nissan Leaf, and the Fiat 500 E. It will also encounter competition from China, notably the highly convincing MG4, which is slightly larger and promises to shake up the existing market with a very aggressive price/performance positioning.
In response, Peugeot has recently chosen to make its city car more accessible by offering the electric version starting from the entry-level trim called “Like.” A significant change is that production of the e-208 will take place at the industrial center in Zaragoza (Spain) rather than the Trnava plant (Slovakia).
Competition among all electric models will be intense, pending the refreshed version expected in 2023. It will feature a new front design incorporating the latest stylistic codes recently introduced by the brand.

Peugeot made us roar with its Turbo 16 engines over past decades. In the 21st century, the Lion of Sochaux continues to inspire—this time, fully electrified. This is what we experienced while test-driving the new 208. But not just any model from the new range: the editorial team at www.testecar.com took the wheel of the fully electric version of the 208, a car Peugeot hopes will become one of its flagship models, just as the 205 was in its time.

A Strong Commitment to Electromobility

Totally agree, but which electric model? You need to keep your eyes open for that. The electric version we tested stands out externally with its grille and the ‘lion’ emblem, whose facets are painted the same color as the body. The ‘dichroic lion‘ changes color depending on the angle. Similarly, on the sides, there’s an ‘e’ badge for ‘electric.’ But what’s even more noticeable is the absence of an exhaust pipe. No gas emissions, so no tailpipe!

We set off along the roads of Hérault. During our test drive, a light north wind carried us from the heart of Montpellier to the Carnon Lagoon and the urban pyramids of La Grande-Motte—excellent locations to explore the car’s urban behavior. The first few miles with Peugeot’s latest model already confirmed the brand’s stated ambition: to fully embrace electromobility while offering versatility in everyday use. The new e-208 is deliberately designed to be at the heart of city life and to “dominate” the top spots in sales.

340 km of range for the Peugeot e-208

But what are its strengths? One of the main ones is undoubtedly its powertrain. This new Peugeot e-208 is equipped with a simple yet highly efficient electric motor. With an output of 100 kW (equivalent to 136 hp), it delivers a torque of 260 Nm. On paper, these figures already make it the most powerful 208 in the entire lineup! But let’s see if these promises hold up…
The few kilometers between us and Montpellier had little impact on the battery’s capacity. Rated for a range of 340 km (WLTP standard), the car carries 350 kg of 50 kWh lithium-ion batteries under the floor. An optimal setup for testing the car’s Eco mode (82 hp).

Brake grip

Behind the wheel, pressing the accelerator propels the car with ease. The motor’s torque is clearly noticeable, making for a very enjoyable driving experience. This responsiveness is particularly appreciated in city traffic, helping with smooth merges and maneuvers. Power comes hand in hand with efficiency: like all electric vehicles, the e-208 recovers energy during deceleration.

The use of regenerative braking is very interesting. While the effect is fairly light when you lift off the accelerator, it can be increased with the “Brake” mode, which provides stronger energy regeneration. The brake pedal remains very useful: although it is soft, it still offers plenty of bite, especially during small urban slowdowns. You quickly learn to modulate your pressure on the brake pedal to stop exactly when you want while recovering the maximum amount of energy.

Technology at Its Core

Inside, the signature of Peugeot’s new interior environment is on full display. In particular, the steering wheel offered by the brand has a smaller diameter, creating a “cockpit” effect where reading the information is easy. This effect is further enhanced by the 3D display offered by the car. However, it’s important to find the right seat height for driving, as depending on your size, you may need to choose whether to read the information below or above the steering wheel.
A true concentration of technology, it makes everyday driving easier. Navigating narrow streets is no problem for this e-208. Its 4-meter length and 1.75-meter width allow it to fit almost anywhere.

On board, the pleasant surprise is that it offers the same level of comfort as the combustion-engine versions. In terms of interior space, the battery has been integrated under the floor (e-CMP electrified modular platform), preserving both cabin space and a trunk volume of 311 liters.
It’s when leaving the congested traffic of Montpellier that the car reveals other qualities. Taking the first secondary roads under our wheels, this fully electric vehicle demonstrates clear dynamic capabilities.

Excellent sound insulation for the Peugeot e-208

Heading into the Hérault hinterland to experience more of the e-208’s strengths. In Normal mode, the car allows for a peaceful drive with optimal comfort. It’s clear that Peugeot has made a strong effort in this area. Normal mode lets you drive while optimizing energy consumption and regeneration, all at a steady speed. The car seems to glide on a cushion of air, especially given its excellent sound insulation, comparable to that of a higher-segment vehicle. This sensation makes the fully electric Peugeot an attractive alternative for daily commuting, thanks to both its driving qualities and its comfort and features.

The ‘GTI’ spirit

With this Peugeot, you can still sense a lineage connected to the character of other iconic models. It’s when you press the mode switch and shift into Sport that the car really comes alive. As soon as the road starts winding, maximum power is delivered to the front wheels with vigor. Of course, the weight of the car (1,445 kg) is noticeable, but the e-208 remains well balanced. A good compromise has been found between handling and chassis performance. While there’s an “e” on the side, one might be tempted to think that the letters “GTI” also influenced the minds of those who designed this Peugeot…

A spirit that did not go unnoticed by our passenger during the test drive. Jérôme, our driver for the day, was thus able to fully appreciate the dynamic qualities of this fully electric car. I must admit, I had never driven an electric car before. I’ve had my license for about thirty years, but this is the first time I’ve been behind the wheel of this type of powertrain. , he explains. I must admit, I’m impressed by this car. In the context of my professional project, it’s clear that having this type of vehicle in a company fleet really makes you think. , assures our guest.

Efficient consumption on the highway

When our test took us to the seaside, the Grand-Motte pyramids rose up before us, along with the urban maze. “We drive in silence and total comfort,” says Jérôme, clearly impressed… In the city, the car is in its element. On country roads, you can drive at a relaxed pace or more dynamically. On the highway, however, it’s the only place where range can drop significantly if you press the accelerator too hard. The battery gauge can quickly dwindle before your eyes.
Still, the car’s handling remains optimal. External temperature can affect range—cold weather is not a battery’s friend. Ideally, cruising speed should not exceed 130 km/h. For efficient consumption, maintaining 110 km/h allows the compact car to stabilize at 24.2 kWh per 100 km.

By offering this e-208, Peugeot makes a strong statement in the highly competitive segment of fully electric compact cars. A car that was eagerly anticipated and on which the Lion brand places high hopes. It could convince those who are still hesitant about going electric. Peugeot is on the right track by offering a vehicle that begins to combine performance, comfort, and driving enjoyment. The price may seem a bit high for a top-of-the-line version, but it’s certainly more sensible to consider it in terms of running costs rather than purchase price (1). The expansion of the charging station network can only help this type of vehicle grow in the automotive market.
